The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) has formed a four-member panel to investigate allegations of irregularities in the handling of pilgrims' offerings and donations at the Badrinath Dham temple. The move comes after claims about donation mismanagement went viral on social media.
The panel will review CCTV footage from the temple premises, record statements of concerned individuals, and examine all available evidence as part of its investigation. BKTC Chief Executive Officer Sohan Singh Rangad said the committee took cognisance of the allegations that were circulating on social media.
Rangad stated on Sunday that BKTC Chairman Hemant Dwivedi constituted the inquiry panel to ensure an impartial investigation. The panel has been directed to examine all available evidence before submitting its report within seven days.
"The temple committee has taken the allegations circulating on social media seriously and has ordered probe." — BKTC President Hemant Dwivedi
The issue has triggered a political controversy in Uttarakhand, coming close on the heels of similar allegations at other major temples. The BKTC's decision to form a probe panel is seen as an attempt to address the concerns transparently.
The committee will conduct a detailed probe based on multiple sources of evidence, including CCTV footage, statements of the individuals concerned, and other available evidence.
In our view, the BKTC's swift response to form a probe panel is the right move. When allegations about donations — which are meant for religious and charitable purposes — surface, the trust must act quickly to maintain public confidence. The seven-day deadline for the report shows urgency, which is important. However, the real test will be whether the findings are made public and whether any action is taken based on the evidence. Devotees who donate at temples like Badrinath Dham deserve to know that their offerings are being handled properly. This probe is a step in that direction, but the temple committee must ensure full transparency in the process.
