The Haryana Government has announced a major relief for property tax defaulters by introducing a 75 per cent waiver on interest accrued on outstanding property tax dues. The scheme will cover pending liabilities for the period from 2010-11 to 2024-25.

According to The Tribune, the special concession will remain available until August 31, 2026. It will apply to property owners who self-certify their property details on the Property Tax Outstanding Payment and No Dues Certificate (NDC) Management System portal and clear their entire outstanding property tax dues up to the assessment year 2026-27.

How the 75% interest waiver works for property owners

Property owners who have defaulted on their property tax payments between 2010-11 and 2024-25 can now get a 75% waiver on the interest that has piled up on those dues. This means instead of paying the full interest amount, they only need to pay 25% of it.

Rohtak Municipal Corporation Commissioner Satyendra Duhan said the benefit would be available to property owners who clear all outstanding property tax dues up to the 2026-27 assessment year. This is a one-time opportunity for defaulters to settle their old dues at a much lower cost.

10% rebate for early payment under the scheme

In addition to the interest waiver, the government is offering a 10% rebate for early payment. This means property owners who pay their dues quickly can get an extra discount on top of the interest waiver.

The scheme is designed to encourage property owners to come forward and clear their pending taxes without the burden of heavy interest penalties. The government hopes this will help recover long-pending dues and bring more properties under the tax net.

Our Take: A practical relief for property tax defaulters

This is a sensible move by the Haryana government. Property tax arrears often pile up because the interest becomes too high for people to pay. By offering a 75% waiver on interest, the government is giving defaulters a real chance to clear their dues without breaking the bank.

The 10% rebate for early payment is a smart incentive. It rewards those who act quickly and helps the government recover funds faster. However, property owners should not wait until the last minute. The deadline of August 31, 2026, gives plenty of time, but the early payment rebate is only for those who pay promptly.

In our view, this is a win-win. Property owners get a significant reduction in what they owe, and the government gets to clear old dues that might otherwise never be collected. If you own property in Haryana and have unpaid taxes, this is the time to act.
