Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced a major push for the remote Bara Bhangal region. During a two-day visit to one of the state's most isolated villages, he said the government will work to secure Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the area and declared it a Natural Farming Panchayat. He also unveiled a branding initiative for the region's famous naturally grown rajmah (kidney beans) to give it a distinct identity and help farmers get better prices.
The Chief Minister announced that the state government would make efforts to secure Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the remote Bara Bhangal region. According to The Tribune, he also declared the area a Natural Farming Panchayat, a move aimed at promoting organic and sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
The Chief Minister announced a branding initiative for Bara Bhangal’s naturally grown rajmah. The goal is to give the kidney beans a distinct identity in the market, which will help farmers fetch better prices for their produce. This is part of a broader effort to improve the livelihoods of residents in one of Himachal's most remote areas.
During his visit, Sukhu urged farmers to take advantage of the state’s Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme for naturally grown crops. He also encouraged them to diversify into walnut and chestnut cultivation, which could provide additional income sources for the community.
In our view, this announcement is a practical and much-needed step for Bara Bhangal. The push for ST status could bring long-overdue recognition and benefits to a region that has remained isolated for decades. The brand makeover for rajmah is a smart move — it directly addresses the market problem that small farmers face. Instead of just producing, they now have a chance to sell their product with a premium identity. The focus on natural farming and diversification into walnuts and chestnuts also shows a clear understanding of what works in the region's terrain. What remains to be seen is how quickly these promises translate into action on the ground.
