The Himachal Pradesh government has released Rs 212 crore to clear pending medical reimbursement claims of its employees and pensioners. The funds will cover claims submitted up to June 27 of the current financial year 2026-27.
According to The Print, the Finance Department sanctioned the funds on the directions of the Chief Minister. Out of the total Rs 212 crore, Rs 131.03 crore has been set aside for pensioners, while Rs 80.97 crore will go to government employees.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu said the previous BJP government had received around Rs 60,000 crore as additional financial assistance from the Centre under the Revenue Deficit Grant (RDG) and GST compensation. He noted that despite this support, the previous government failed to make timely payments of the Sixth Pay Commission arrears.

This release of Rs 212 crore is a significant step for the thousands of employees and pensioners in Himachal Pradesh who have been waiting for their medical reimbursement claims. In our view, clearing pending dues is not just about financial management — it is about respecting the trust of those who serve the state. The government's focus on settling these claims quickly is a positive signal, especially for pensioners who often depend on these reimbursements for their healthcare needs. However, the larger question remains about the state's fiscal health and how it plans to manage such payments consistently in the future.
