Two people died after the pick-up vehicle they were travelling in fell into a 500-metre-deep gorge in Kinnaur district. The victims were identified as Umesh (24) and Daya (37), both residents of Chopal in Shimla.
The two were on their way from Bhabhanagar to Wangtoo when the vehicle went off the road and plunged into the gorge.
Kinnaur Accident: How Police Found the Missing Vehicle
Police said they received information that a pick-up vehicle from Chopal had gone missing in the Kinnaur area. Acting on this, the police launched a search operation.
During the search, the vehicle was spotted in the gorge near Kafnu. The two occupants were found dead at the spot.
The bodies were later sent for post-mortem, and SP Sushil Sharma confirmed that a case had been registered in connection with the incident.

Our Take: Kinnaur's Mountain Roads Need a Hard Look
This is a tragic and, sadly, familiar kind of news from Himachal's high-altitude districts. Two men left home for a routine journey and never made it back. The fact that police had to launch a search operation after the vehicle was reported missing shows how quickly a vehicle can disappear on these routes — and how little margin for error the terrain allows.
In our view, the focus after such accidents should not stop at registering a case. The stretch between Bhabhanagar and Wangtoo, like many roads in Kinnaur, runs along deep gorges. Road safety measures — proper barriers, warning signs at blind curves, and faster response systems for missing vehicles — matter far more here than in the plains. Families in these districts deserve roads that do not turn a simple trip into a fatal one.
For now, two families in Chopal are waiting for answers. The post-mortem and the police investigation will tell us more about what exactly went wrong. But the larger question of how safe these mountain roads are remains unanswered.
