A former village sarpanch was shot dead in Punjab's Ludhiana district. Navjeet Singh Neetu, 55, who had served as sarpanch of Mannewal village, was killed by two motorcycle-borne assailants on South City Road in the Ladhowal area.

Neetu was on his way to his land when the attackers intercepted him and opened fire. He sustained multiple bullet injuries and died on the spot. The assailants escaped on their motorcycle after the shooting.

Ludhiana Sarpanch Murder: What Police Say Happened

The firing triggered panic in the area. Police teams reached the spot soon after and began investigating the incident. Around four empty bullet shells were recovered from the crime scene, according to the police.

ACP (West) Jatinderpal Singh said a case had been registered against eight persons. This includes two identified accused and six unidentified persons. The police were scanning CCTV footage as part of the investigation.

Land Dispute Suspected Behind Mannewal Village Killing

The killing is suspected to be linked to a land dispute. Neetu was heading to his land when he was intercepted, which points to a possible property-related motive behind the attack.

The police have not yet confirmed the names of the identified accused or made any arrests in the case so far, based on the information available.

Our Take: Why This Ludhiana Firing Matters

To put it plainly, this is a disturbing case of a former elected village representative being gunned down in the open. The fact that the attackers came on a motorcycle, intercepted him on a road, and escaped shows how brazen the killing was.

In our view, the land dispute angle is the part that deserves the most attention. Disputes over land in rural Punjab have a long and troubling history, and when they turn into armed attacks, it is a failure of both local administration and law enforcement. The police have booked eight people, but booking names is only the first step. What matters now is whether the two identified accused are actually arrested and whether the CCTV footage leads to the six unidentified persons.

For readers in Ludhiana and across Punjab, this news is a reminder that land conflicts can turn deadly even for people who have held public office. The police need to move fast, and the investigation should be transparent. A former sarpanch being shot dead on a public road is not just a crime against one family — it is a warning about how unresolved land disputes are being handled on the ground.
