A delegation from the Shiromani Akali Dal ‘Waris Punjab De’ has stepped in to calm tensions after a violent clash between Nihang Sikh pilgrims and local residents in Uttarakhand. The group, which includes prominent political figures, left for the state on Sunday to address the growing fear and panic in the area.

Delegation members and their mission

The convoy includes Tarsem Singh, an executive member of the party and father of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh; Faridkot MP Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa; MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali; and Harjinder Singh, a member of the managing committee of Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan, Sohana. According to The Tribune, the delegation departed from Gurdwara Sohana Sahib near Chandigarh.

The primary goal of the visit is to ease the atmosphere of fear and panic that followed the clash. The delegation aims to reassure both the Sikh community and local residents that the situation is being handled peacefully.

The clash that sparked the intervention

The violence erupted on June 16 in Karnaprayag, Uttarakhand, when a group of Nihang Sikh pilgrims returning from Gurdwara Sri Hemkund Sahib got into a dispute with local residents. According to The Tribune, the argument began over a vehicle parking issue near a hotel in the Karnaprayag market. The situation quickly escalated into violence, leaving four people injured.

Police have alleged that two Nihang pilgrims assaulted residents who tried to intervene and stop the fight, causing injuries to four locals. The incident has created significant tension between the two communities in the region.

Our Take: A necessary step to prevent further escalation

In our view, the swift intervention by the Akali Dal Waris Punjab De delegation is a responsible move. When a clash involves religious pilgrims and local residents, emotions can run high on both sides. Sending senior political figures to the scene shows a commitment to de-escalation and dialogue rather than confrontation.

However, the root cause of the dispute — a simple parking issue — highlights how quickly small disagreements can spiral into violence. Both communities need to exercise restraint and patience, especially in areas where religious tourism brings people from different regions together. The delegation's presence may help calm the situation, but long-term peace will depend on better communication and conflict resolution mechanisms at the local level.
