Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar (CSK) Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Palampur, has issued an advisory for maize growers in the state to remain vigilant against fall armyworm. This pest is highly destructive and can cause severe damage to the maize crop if not controlled in time.
How to identify fall armyworm infestation
Surjeet Kumar, Head of the Department of Entomology at the university, said that farmers should regularly inspect their fields to detect the pest at an early stage. According to The Tribune, he explained that infestation can be identified by windowpane feeding on tender leaves, irregular holes in foliage, and the presence of larvae and their excreta inside the whorl of maize plants. "Early detection is essential to minimise crop losses," he added.
Recommended pest control methods
The university has advised farmers to adopt Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices rather than relying solely on chemical pesticides. This approach combines different methods to control pests effectively while reducing harm to the environment and crops.
Our Take: Early action is key for maize farmers
This advisory from Palampur farm university is a timely reminder for maize growers. Fall armyworm is a fast-spreading pest that can ruin entire fields if ignored. In our view, farmers should take this warning seriously and start inspecting their crops regularly. The emphasis on Integrated Pest Management is also important — relying only on chemical sprays can lead to resistance and environmental damage. Simple steps like checking for early signs of infestation can save both the crop and the farmer's income.
