Haryana and Rajasthan have signed an agreement for the construction and implementation of the Yamuna Water Project. The pact was signed in New Delhi on Monday in the presence of Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah.
According to a video report, the project is worth ₹34,102 crore. The signing ceremony was also attended by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, and senior officials from the central and state governments.
Decades-Old Water Dispute Resolved
Speaking at the event, Amit Shah said the agreement has resolved a water-related issue that had been affecting the people of Haryana and Rajasthan for nearly three decades. He called the pact an excellent example of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mantra of “solution through dialogue.”
According to The Hindu, the MoU implements a 1994 Yamuna water agreement between the two states. Shah emphasized that the agreement shows what can be achieved when states move forward in a spirit of cooperation.
Key Attendees and Significance
The event saw the presence of top political leaders from both states. Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini and Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma were present, along with Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil. The agreement marks a major step in addressing long-standing water-sharing challenges between the neighboring states.
According to ETV Bharat English, the pact was signed in Shah's presence for the implementation of the Yamuna Water Project. The agreement is expected to benefit millions of people in both states by ensuring better water availability.
Our Take: A Win for Cooperative Federalism
This agreement is a significant achievement for both states and the central government. Water disputes between states often drag on for decades, causing hardship for farmers and communities. The fact that Haryana and Rajasthan have come together to resolve a nearly 30-year-old issue through dialogue is commendable.
In our view, this pact shows that when political will exists, even the most complex problems can be solved. The presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the chief ministers of both states signals that water security is a top priority. The ₹34,102-crore investment in the Yamuna Water Project will likely improve irrigation and drinking water supply in the region. This is a positive step that other states with water disputes should take note of.
