  • Cause of death: Fall from the stands at TRC Ground

Our Take: A Death That Should Not Have Happened

This is a tragic loss that raises a simple question. How does a spectator fall from the stands at a football ground and lose his life? Stands at sports venues are meant to hold crowds safely. If a man can slip and fall in a way that kills him, something about the safety of that structure needs a serious look.

In our view, the authorities should examine the stands at TRC Ground — the railings, the steps, the crowd management. A young man went to watch a football match and did not come home. His family in Udhampur deserves answers, and other spectators deserve the assurance that this will not repeat.

To put it plainly, sports venues must be safe for the people who fill them. Until that is checked and fixed, every spectator at such grounds is taking a risk they should not have to take.
