The managements of the Shanan and Bassi hydroelectric projects in Mandi district have sounded a high alert after heavy monsoonal rainfall caused the Uhal river to swell. The two projects, located at Jogindernagar about 35 km from Palampur, rely on the Uhal and Lambadug rivers as their primary water sources for power generation.
According to The Tribune, the water inflow in the Uhal river reached around 1,196 cusecs on Sunday night due to the ongoing spell of rain. Official sources confirmed that the river is in spate, raising concerns about the safety of the projects and nearby communities.
Barrage gates may be opened at short notice
Project authorities have warned that the barrage gates on the Uhal river at Barot could be opened at a short notice if the water inflow continues to rise. This measure is necessary to manage the excess water and prevent damage to the infrastructure.
People living on the riverbanks have been advised to remain vigilant and shift to safer locations whenever necessary. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to take further action if the water levels continue to climb.
Our Take: Preparedness is key during monsoon season
In our view, the swift response by the project managements is commendable. Issuing a high alert and advising residents to move to safer locations shows that lessons from past flood events are being taken seriously. However, the situation highlights the ongoing vulnerability of communities living near rivers in hilly regions during the monsoon. While the alert is a necessary step, long-term measures such as better flood forecasting and community awareness programs could help reduce risks. For now, residents should follow the advisories and stay safe.
