Leica F1 Camera Costs $10,000 in New Collab

Leica and Formula 1 have built a camera together, and it costs $10,000. The German camera maker teamed up with the racing series to create the product, according to Fortune. The deal brings together two worlds that Leica's top U.S. executive says have a lot in common.

Mike Giannattasio, president of Leica Camera North America, told Fortune that F1 "goes at incredible speed" and that photography helps "stop the moment." In simple terms, a race car flies past in a blink — a camera is how you hold on to that blink.

Why Leica and Formula 1 Made a Camera Together

The link between racing and photography is not just a marketing idea. Some of F1's most popular drivers are already serious about photography. Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris have both been seen with Leica cameras, and Norris runs a separate Instagram account just for his photos.

Giannattasio says the overlap runs deeper than the drivers. He pointed to the people who collect cameras and the people who collect cars, and said the two groups are often the same crowd.

"There is such synergy between people who collect cameras and people who collect cars. If you see people who are passionate about vintage cars or racing cars, and if they have anything other than a passenger in the seat next to them, eight out of 10 times it's going to be a Leica camera." — Mike Giannattasio, via Fortune

That shared audience, he said, made the partnership an easy call. The camera was announced on a Tuesday, per Fortune's report.

What the $10,000 Leica-F1 Camera Means for Buyers

At $10,000, this is not a camera for casual buyers. It sits in Leica's tradition of premium, collector-friendly gear — the kind of product bought as much for what it represents as for what it does.

  • The camera is a joint product from Leica Camera and Formula 1
  • It carries a $10,000 price tag
  • Leica's U.S. president frames it around F1's speed and photography's ability to freeze a moment
  • F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris have both been spotted with Leica cameras
  • Norris keeps a separate Instagram account dedicated to his photography

Our Take: A Smart Pairing, but a Narrow One

In our view, this partnership makes sense on paper. Car collectors and camera collectors really do overlap, and having Hamilton and Norris already carrying Leicas gives the brand something money usually can't buy: real credibility with racing fans.

But we should be clear about who this is for. A $10,000 camera is a luxury purchase, and most F1 fans will never hold one. The risk is that the product becomes a collector's trophy rather than a tool photographers actually use at the track.

To put it plainly, the story here is not the price — it is the idea. F1 is one of the fastest sports on earth, and Leica is selling the promise of slowing it down to a single frame. If the camera delivers on that promise, the price will feel justified to the people it is aimed at. If it is just a logo on a body, fans will notice. Either way, the collaboration shows how far F1's reach now stretches — from the grid to the gallery wall.
