Punjab Police Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, who was named by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in an international extortion case, has been arrested in Hoshiarpur. Nagra was the former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda police station.

FBI Allegations Against Gurinderjit Nagra

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation named Nagra on February 7 in connection with an alleged international extortion racket. According to US authorities, Nagra was involved in a $400,000 extortion plot. The FBI alleges that he worked in connivance with the Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gangs to target families based in the United States.

According to NDTV, Nagra allegedly helped extort $400,000 from a Los Angeles family by threatening false murder charges.

Arrest and Prior Action by Hoshiarpur Police

The Hoshiarpur police arrested Nagra following the FBI's allegations. Before the arrest, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Hoshiarpur, had ordered his immediate transfer to the Police Lines after reports emerged about his involvement in the FBI probe.

According to The Times of India, the FBI named Nagra in an alleged $400,000 gang-linked extortion case, leading to his transfer.

Connection to International Gangs

The case highlights the alleged involvement of Indian police officers with international organized crime syndicates. The FBI's indictment forms part of a wider case against members of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria syndicate.

According to The New Indian Express, federal officials identified Nagra in an indictment that is part of a wider case against 17 alleged Jaggu Bhagwanpuria syndicate members.

Our Take: A Serious Breach of Trust

This case is deeply troubling. A police officer, who is supposed to protect citizens, is accused of working with criminal gangs to extort money from families abroad. The fact that the FBI had to step in shows how far this alleged conspiracy reached. In our view, the arrest is a necessary step, but it also raises serious questions about oversight within the Punjab Police. The public needs to know how an active officer could allegedly collaborate with such gangs. This case must be investigated thoroughly to restore faith in the system.
