The Delhi High Court has sentenced actor Rajpal Yadav to three months of simple imprisonment in a cheque bounce case. The court noted that Yadav repeatedly failed to honour settlement commitments he had made before the court.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma delivered the verdict in a batch of seven cases filed by M/s Murli Projects Private Limited. While Yadav was sentenced to three months' imprisonment in each case, the court directed that all sentences would run concurrently.
Court Orders Rs 1.05 Crore Payment Per Case
Apart from the jail term, the High Court ordered the actor to pay Rs 1.05 crore in each of the seven cases. According to Times of India, the court also directed his wife, Radha Rajpal Yadav, to pay a fine of more than Rs 5 crore in each case.
Court Cites Repeated Defaults by Actor
During the proceedings, the court observed that Yadav had been given several opportunities to settle the matter but failed to keep his commitments. The Delhi High Court's decision came after it found that the actor repeatedly defaulted on promises made before the court.
The case involves multiple cheque bounce complaints filed against the actor and his wife. The court's strong response reflects its view that Yadav did not take the legal process seriously despite being given multiple chances.
Our Take: A Clear Message on Legal Accountability
In our view, this judgment sends a straightforward message — the courts will not tolerate repeated dishonouring of commitments, even by public figures. Rajpal Yadav was given multiple opportunities to settle the matter, but he failed to follow through. The concurrent running of sentences means the actual jail time is limited, but the financial penalty of over Rs 7 crore is significant. This case is a reminder that cheque bounce cases are treated seriously in India, and celebrities are not above the law. The court's decision to hold both the actor and his wife accountable shows that legal obligations apply equally to all.
