The flood situation in Assam has taken a turn for the worse. The death toll has climbed to three, and the number of people affected by the deluge has surged nearly fourfold to more than 37,000 in just one day, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Sharp Rise in Affected Population Across Six Districts
The disaster management authority reported that floodwaters have inundated parts of six districts — Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat and Sivasagar. The flooding now affects 12 revenue circles and 99 villages across these areas.
According to National Herald, a total of 37,032 people are currently affected by the floods. This marks a sharp rise from more than 9,600 people across six districts on the previous day.
Lakhimpur District Bears the Brunt of the Floods
Lakhimpur remains the worst-hit district, with 35,696 people affected by the deluge. This means the vast majority of the affected population is concentrated in this single district.
The latest death was reported from the Naduar revenue circle in Sonitpur district over the past 24 hours, the disaster management authority said in its bulletin.
Our Take: A Rapidly Worsening Crisis
In our view, the fourfold surge in affected population in a single day is deeply concerning. It shows how quickly the flood situation can escalate in Assam, catching communities off guard. The fact that Lakhimpur accounts for over 35,000 of the 37,000 affected people suggests that relief efforts need to be heavily concentrated there. The rising death toll, even if still low, is a reminder that every hour counts in rescue and relief operations. Authorities must act swiftly to prevent further loss of life and provide shelter to those displaced.
