The first phase of Census 2027 in Delhi has recorded more than 2.3 crore people as ordinarily residing in the national capital, according to provisional data. The exercise, known as House Listing Operations (HLO), concluded on 14 June.
Officials said the house listing covered 75,98,982 census houses and 54,98,560 households across all 13 districts of Delhi. The preliminary data showed that 2,30,78,796 people were ordinarily residing in the city at the time of the exercise.
Provisional Data and What It Means
The figure of 2.3 crore residents is provisional and does not represent the final population count. Officials clarified that the actual population will be determined during the second phase of the census, known as Population Enumeration, which is scheduled for February 2027.
According to National Herald, the house listing exercise was carried out through 45,863 House Listing Blocks (HLBs) across the capital.
How the Census Works
The House Listing Operations is the first phase of the census. It involves preparing an inventory of buildings and houses and collecting information on household amenities and assets. This phase provides a base for the second phase, where actual population enumeration — counting every person — takes place.
As reported by India Today, the first phase covered 55 lakh households across the national capital's 13 districts.
Our Take: A Snapshot, Not the Final Picture
This provisional data gives us an early look at Delhi's population, but it is important to remember that it is not the final count. The real number will only be known after the Population Enumeration phase in February 2027. In our view, this data is useful for planning and resource allocation, but it should be treated as a preliminary estimate. The final census count will be the one that matters for policy decisions and representation.
