Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Madhya Pradesh, calling the state an "epicentre of corruption and loot". He made the statement while citing media reports of an alleged ₹1,200 crore ethanol-linked rice scam in the state.
Kharge's allegations against BJP government
In a post on X in Hindi, Kharge said that Madhya Pradesh has become a synonym for corruption under the BJP government, where one scam after another keeps surfacing. According to The Hindu, Kharge stated: "Madhya Pradesh has become the epicentre of corruption and loot and a synonym for corruption under the BJP government, where one scam after another surfaces."
The Congress president also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence over the allegations. He claimed that accountability in public life had been "trampled upon" under the BJP government.
The alleged ethanol-linked rice scam
Kharge's attack comes after media reports surfaced about an alleged scam involving subsidised rice meant for ethanol production. According to The Telegraph, subsidised rice that was supposed to go to empanelled ethanol plants in Madhya Pradesh was allegedly diverted to private mills. The rice was then reportedly recycled back into government warehouses through fraudulent means.
The alleged scam is estimated to be worth ₹1,200 crore. Reports suggest that the diverted rice was part of the public distribution system, meant for the poor, but was instead used for private profit.

Congress targets BJP ahead of elections
The allegations come at a politically significant time. Madhya Pradesh is a key state for both the Congress and the BJP, and corruption has been a major election issue in the past. Kharge's statement is part of a broader Congress campaign to highlight alleged corruption under BJP rule in the state.
According to National Herald, Kharge's post on X has gained attention, with the Congress party amplifying the message across social media platforms. The party is using the alleged scam to question the BJP's governance record in Madhya Pradesh.
Our Take: A familiar pattern of political blame game
Kharge's allegations are serious, but they follow a familiar pattern in Indian politics. Whenever a scam is reported, the opposition immediately blames the ruling party, and the ruling party either denies or stays silent. In this case, Kharge has directly questioned PM Modi's silence, which puts pressure on the BJP to respond.
To put it plainly, the alleged ₹1,200 crore rice scam is a serious matter if proven true. Diverting subsidised rice meant for the poor is not just corruption — it is a crime against the most vulnerable citizens. However, without a proper investigation, these remain allegations. The BJP government in Madhya Pradesh needs to either clarify or order a probe to restore public trust.
In our view, the real issue here is not just about one scam. It is about the growing perception that accountability in public life is weakening. Whether it is the Congress or the BJP in power, citizens deserve transparency. Kharge's statement is a political attack, but it also raises a valid question: why is the Prime Minister silent on such a large alleged scam in a BJP-ruled state?
